bution to the decision 0/1905 to centralize the survey and map-
ping activities in the archipelago, with a leading role allocated to
the TD, was effective. Amongst others, the mapping of taxable
native arable Land, a very important task, was assigned to the
Survey. Under his supervision several important activities were
initiated. He undertook the triangulation of the East coast of
Sumatra, the topographic survey of South-Sumatra and he pre-
pared the triangulation of Celebes. Furthermore, he introduced
sketch maps and overviews of the peripheral areas and he started
the production ofannual reports ofthe TD. Several ofhis activi
ties show a long term perspective view, therefore his influence was
noticeable long after he resigned as the head ofthe Survey. Dü
ring his term of service, in 190p, the TD became an independent
military unit, directly falling under the Commander ofthe army.

L'article retrace les realisations de J.J.K. Enthoven, Directeur du

1909. II a commence sa carriere en tant que responsable de la car
tographie de Borneo Occidental sur la base des leves astronomi-
ques; il avait acheve ce travail en neuf ans
(1886-1895). Nomme directeur, il a reussi
restructurer son service aussi bien du point
de vue technique qu 'administratif de
meme il en a renforce la position.
En particulier, il a aggrandi le service, a
ameliore la connaissance technique du
personnel et a facilite les etudes de ses of
ficiers; il a modernise le service de repro-
duction et a engage des topographes In
donesiens. En outre, on a confie une
täche tres importante au TD savoir la
cartographie des parcelles sujettes
l'impöt des autochtones. Sous sa direc-
tion ont ete inities divers travaux impor-
tants savoir la triangulation de la cote
Orientale de Sumatra, les leves topograp-
hiques de Sumatra du Sud; il a prepare
la triangulation de Celebes. De plus, il a
introduit des croquis cartographiques des
regions exterieures et a commence pu-
blier des rapports annuels de son Service.
Beaucoup de ses mesures temoignent de
sa vision d'avenir dont l'influence etait
encore manifeste apres son depart comme
directeur de TD. Celui-ci est devenu,
pendant son mandat (190p), une partie
autonome de l'armee, sous la responsabi-
lite directe du commandant.
De inwoners van Oman zijn trots op hun land, op hun
suitan, en op de produkten die er vandaan komen. Die
trots is niet geheel onterecht. In het verleden had Oman
een lange handelstraditie met onder meer China, India
en Oost-Afrika. Het had kolonien en een eigen, toleran
te en hoogstaande islamitische cultuur. Daarna kwam
een ongeveer honderdjarige periode van stagnatie. De
vader van de huidige suitan, die tot 1970 regeerde, pro
beerde het land zo veel mogelijk af te schermen van de
buitenwereld, en vooral van westerse en decadente in-
vloeden. Kranten, radio en televisie waren er niet en in
1970 telde het land - met een omvang van negen keer
Nederland - slechts twee Scholen en een kliniekje. Zijn
zoon, suitan Qabus, heeft in de kwart eeuw dat hij aan
de macht is het land veranderd van een middeleeuwse sa-
menleving naar een moderne maatschappij. Oman wil
wel moderniseren, maar niet verwestersen. De eigen
identiteit en geschiedenis staan hoog in het vaandel.
Längs de autowegen staan dan 00k allerlei sculpturen
opgesteld die de Omani's moeten doordringen van het
verleden en de identiteit: een wierookbrander, een Arabi
sche kofßepot en ander serviesgoed. Kaarten hören daar
00k bij. Op de foto ziet u de helft van een serie van acht
kaarten längs de grote weg die delen van de Capital Area
en de internationale luchthaven met elkaar verbindt. Elk
geeft de contouren van het land weer, en met pictogram-
men wordt daarbinnen het herkomstgebied van bepaalde
produkten aangegeven. Thematische kaarten op straat
dus.
