First there is the visualisation for the communication of infor mation, according to the traditional cartographic rules. Second is the visualisation of spatial analysis and third is for the explo ration of spatial data. The developments that underlie these strategies are discussed, together with some research projects. Next to this, suggestions are given concerning the necessary car tographic functionality for the benefit of visual data explora tion. Resume M.J. Ensuite, la visualisation de l'analyse spatiale et enfin, l'exploitation des donnees spatiales. L'article analyse l'e- volution qui est la base de ces strategies, ainsi que quelques projets de recherche.
