The climax in Dutch atlas production came between app. 1630
and 1670. As a consequence of stijf competition between the
publishers Hondius-Janssonius and Blaeu, atlases became big-
ger and more beautiful. In the middle ofthis period, in 1648,
the Peace Treaty of Munster resulted in several territorial chan-
ges. The recognition of the northern part of the Netherlands
and the related Separation of this part from the Holy Roman
Empire resulted in a definitive split in the Seventeen Provinces,
which until then were more or less considered to be one unit.
For the Conference organized to commemorate the 1648 Peace
Treaty of Munster, several atlases published before and afier
1648 were examined to assess whether these changes were incor-
porated in the atlases. In the issue ofthe Atlas Novus by Joan
nes Janssonius and in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Joan
Blaeu from later than 1648 no change at all can be discovered.
Only in the Atlas Maior by Blaeu (1662) and in the atlas by
the heirs of Janssonius (1674) were the territorial changes taken
into account by including a new map of the Republic of the
United Netherlands, and in the sequence ofthe maps the par-
tition between north and south was taken into account. The
maps themselves were not changed.

Le sommet de la production d'atlas aux
Pays-Bas se situe entre 1630 et 1670. Suite
la grande concurrence entre les maisons
d'edition Hondius-Janssonius et Blaeu
les atlas deviennent plus grands et plus
beaux. En 1648, soit au milieu de cette
periode, est signe la paix de Westphalie
Munster, avec de nombreuses modifica-
tions territoriales. La reconnaissance des
Pays-Bas du Nord et par lä leur Separa
tion du Saint Empire Romain constitu-
ent la subdivision des Dix-Sept Provin
ces, considerees auparavant comme une
entite. A l'occasion du congres comme-
moratif de la Paix de Westphalie, l'on a
examine comment ces changements ont
ete indiques dans les atlas publies avant
et apres 1648. Dans les editions d'apres
1648 de Atlas Novus de Joannes Jansso
nius et dans le Theatrum Orbis Terra
rum de Joan Blaeu aucun changement
n'est indique et ce n'est qu'en 1662 dans
/Atlas Maior de Blaeu et en 1673 dans
celui des heritiers de Janssonius que
ceux-ci apparaissent et dans la mesure
qu'une nouvelle carte de la Republique
des Provinces Unies y est ajoutee et que
la suite des cartes correspond la dubdi-
vision entre Nord et Sud. Les cartes elles-
memes n'ont pas ete corrigees.
Op de zijgevel van het fraai gerestaureerde 'Maison des
Compagnons' in Limoges is deze van metaalband ver-
vaardigde kaart van Frankrijk bevestigd. Het gebouw,
voormalige kannunnikhuizen, is gerestaureerd onder lei-
ding van de Föderation compagnonnique des metiers du
bätiment. Deze federatie begeleidt jonge bouwvakkers
die Frankrijk doorreizen om hun ambacht te verbeteren.
Zij noemen zieh 'Compagnons du Tour de France'. De
reizende bouwvakker omgeven door Frankrijks contou-
ren symboliseert wellicht zo'n Compagnon - overigens,
kennelijk komen ze niet op Corsica!
