3. Deze omvatten niet alle kaarten in de collectie. Er zijn 00k nog ca.
13.000 beschrijvingen uit de jaren 1983-1986 in het Pica-bestand
(Project Integrated Catalogue Automation, het gezamenlijk catalo-
giseersysteem van de wetenschappelijke bibliotheken in Neder
land), die momenteel geconverteerd worden. Met ingang van het
tweede kwartaal van 1997 bestaat het gehele bestand uit ca. 64.000
beschrijvingen.

Homeros een van de sluwste mensen ooit. Om een onbekende re
den was hij veroordeeld om in de onderwereld zonder ophouden
een kolossale steen een heuvel op te duwen die, bij de top aangeko-

6. Om dezelfde reden is de classißcatie voor regio's zodanig ruim op-
gezet dat administratieve en territoriale veranderingen in de toe-
komst gemakkelijk ingepast kunnen worden. (Voornaamste kritiek
op de vroegere situatie was dat de UDC-classificatie zodanig nauw
opgezet werd dat veranderende inzichten onlogisch numeriek inge
past dienden te worden. Vandaar het Van de Waal/ccK-voorstel

7. Er was geen tijd om het oorspronkelijk in kleur geproduceerde kar-
togram van rasters te voorzien. Hierdoor lijkt dit zwart/wit-karto-
gram op een choropletenkaart, terwijl het in werkelijkheid een cho-
rochromatische representatie is.

Given the diversity of users of map col
lections, access should be provided at va-
rious information levels. General de-
scriptions of map collections are mainly
numerical, and they hardly show the di
versity in subjects. Collection profiles can
give a clearer qualitative and quantita
tive understanding ofthe composition of
map collections. Cartographic represen-
tation by several map typ es to show the
coverage per (sub)theme and other char-
acteristics makes use of the profile more
attractive and may give a better insight.

Vu la grande diversite des utilisateurs de
collections cartographiques, l'acces aux
informations doit etre assure plusieurs
niveaux. Les catalogues et descriptions de
ces collections sont, pour la plupart
numeriques et indiquent peu ou prou la
variete des sujets. Les profils de collection
assurent une meilleur Ventilation de la
composition de ces collections. Des repre-
sentations cartographiques de divers ty-
pes, indiquant les sous-themes et autres
caracteristiques rendent l'emploi des pro
fils plus attractifs et assurent une meil-
leure connaissance de la matiere.
