ty Library

The map and atlas collection of the Royal Netherlands Geo
graphical Society (KNAG) has been housed since 1880 in the
Amsterdam University Library ub) as part ofthe 'Library and
map collection ofthe Royal Netherlands Geographical Society'.
It is one ofthe many scientific collections which have been gif-
ted or - as in this case - entrusted in loan to the UB. Since its
move to the UB the collection has grown steadily, in parallel
with the development of the library's own map collection. Until
1976 the knag was concerned, in varying degrees of attention,
with the growth ofits collection. In the early years, acquisitions
were almost entirely gifts by committee members, institutions
and sister societies. Around the year 1910, several very impor-
tant and valuable additions were made by purchase, including
the Muller Collection, consisting ofmore than fifteen thousand
atlas maps from the i6th and i7th centuries and several old at
lases and rare charts on parchment. The process of many years'
filling of gaps in the map and atlas collections of the UB and
the knag and keeping them up to date has resulted in their be-
coming much interwoven physically as well as in content.

La collection de cartes et d'atlas de la KNAG est conservee, en
tant que partie integrante de la Bibliotheque et de la collection
de cartes de la knag, depuis 1880 dans cette bibliotheque uni
versitäre (ub). C'est une des collections scientifiques qui ont
ete ojferte I'ub ou - comme le cas echeant - ont ete deposees
pour les prets, par des soins de I'ub. Depuis lors cette collection
a connu une augmentation consequente, parallelement avec le
developpement des depöts cartographiques, propriete de I'ub
elle-meme.
fusqu'en 1976 la knag s'occupait, avec une intensite variable,
de laugmentation sa collection, et ceci au debut presque uni-
quement par des dons des membres du conseil, des particuliers,
des institutions et des associations-soeurs. Vers 1910, la collection
s'est enrichie par des tres importantes et precieuses acquisitions
dont la Collection Muller, composee de plus de 13.000 cartes
d'atlas des XVie - XVUie siecles, ainsi que de nombreux anciens
atlas et de cartes maritimes 'paskaarten' tres rares sur parche-
min. Suite la mise äjour et l'elimination des lacunes, pen-
dant de longues decennies, nous sommes en presence d'une Inte
gration physique et conceptuelle entre les collections de la knag
et de I'UB.
