Digital geographical Information is increasingly important in
modern vuarfare. Therefore the Dutch Ministry of Defence de-
cided to take part in the construction ofa worldwide geograph
ical vector database at the scale 1:240.000, the Vmap level i
project. The Dutch topographic mapping Organisation, Topo-
grafische Dienst Nederland TDN), has been busy with the pro
duction ofthis database since 1994. Besides its own Dutch ter
ritory, the TDN has the responsibility for the production ofthe
database for several other parts of the world. This paper gives
an overview ofthe different aspects ofthe Vmap level 1 product
and the characteristics ofthe production process ofthese data at
the Topografische Dienst.

territoire national, le TDN a la responsabilite pour la produc
tion de cette base de donnees d'autres regions du monde. L'arti-
cle passe en revue les divers aspects du produit 'Vmap level 1'
ainsi que les caracteristiques du processus de production de ces
donnees par le TDN.
