Tenslotte
Door het aldus uitwerken van de concepten in bestaande
atlassen verkrijgt men een beter inzicht in de door de ver-
schillende soorten atlassen gestelde eisen, en dat komt op
den duur de productie van nieuwe atlassen weer ten goede.
We realiseren ons daardoor tevens hoe belangrijk de eigen-
schappen van het atlasconcept zijn, en dat is weer een aan-
moediging om die eigenschappen 00k in een elektronische
omgeving te bewaren.

shop Digital Cartography for the Information Highway, dat in maart

An atlas is a superior tool for the comparison ofmany aspects of
geographical information. It lends itself to the comparison of
areas, ofthemes and ofdifferent time periods and for comparis-
ons of the representation with the reality. With reference to
several atlas concepts and to examples, the article explains
which demands and aims are relevant to atlases. The develop-
ments through time are outlined. The most recent product, the
electronic atlas, offers much wider user facilities than the print-
ed atlas. The article makes clear that the atlas concept remains
very useful also in the digital age.

Un atlas est un instrument superieur l'egard de l'information
geographique quant aux aspects de comparaison des espaces, des
themes et des diverses epoques ainsi que pour la comparaison de
la representation avec la realite. Sur la base de plusieurs con
cepts d'atlas et en citant des exemples, l'article definit les exi-
gences que l'on peut poser pour les atlas et en analyse les objec-
tifs et ceci dans un cadre chronologique. Les realisations les plus
recentes les atlas electroniques ojfrent bien plus de facilites que
les atlas imprimes. En conclusion: le concept d'atlas reste utile
l"äge numerique' aussi.
