22. Over de introductie van de dieptelijn in de geschiedenis van de
kartografie is inmiddels een behoorlijke bibliografie beschikbaar.
In zijn boek Cartography in France 1660-1848 heeft Joseph Konvitz
al die gegevens samengevat en aan de hand daarvan een genealogie
van de dieptelijn samengesteld. Ten onrechte suggereert Konvitz
dat de dieptelijn na Cruquius in de Nederlandse kartografie geen

dont le contenu et le dessin correspondent aux principes gene-
raux etablis en 1/30 par N.S. Cruquius (16/8-1/34): il s'agit
d'assurer une presentation uniforme quant Techelle et au des
sin, dans une cartographie aussi claire que possible oü l'infor-
mation topographique est limitee en fonction aux exigences des
travaux confies ce departement.
Des isobathes, profils et diagrammes completent les cartes afin
de serrer de plus pres les processus naturels invisibles ayant in-
fluence le paysage.
Ce modele cartographique, conclut l'article, a ete suivi conti-
nuellementpendant le xvine siecle.
Summary

maps of Holland. The establishment ofa cartographie database
for the management ofDutch rivers

River management in the province of Holland in the eight
eenth Century was coordinated by an ofßcial department. This
water management department worked closely with similar lo-
cal and regional departments, also in neighbouring provinces.
It took care of the maintenance of rivers, river dykes and sea
dykes. In order to perform its fitnetion efficiently, all of these
features were mapped accurately. With this organisational
structure as background, this article gives an overview ofthe ri
ver maps that were commissioned by the water management
department ofthe province of Holland.
It is shown that the content and design of these maps followed
general principles developed in 1/30 by the surveyor Nicolaas
Samuel Cruquius (16/8 - 1/34). A characteristic was the at-
tempt at uniform scale and design: the basic principle was to
create as clear a map as possible, containing only the topo-
graphic information relevant to the work ofthe department.
Experiments with depth contours were made and profiles and
diagrams were included in order to portray as accurately as pos
sible the invisible natural processes which influenced the river
landscape. The article concludes that this cartographie model
was followed consistently throughout the eighteenth Century.
