Summary
E. Siekierska, D. Williams dr G. Newton - Do metadata meet
the requirements of cartographers? CMIT as a meta-information
toolfor electronic atlases
Keywords: map curatorship, metadata, applications
The question dealt with in this article is the way in which exis-
ting metadata meet the requirements of cartographers. The ar
ticle is based on the authors' orientation research to arrive at
the development of a systematic approach to the study and eva-
luation of electronic atlases. The following questions are asked:
what are metadata and what are their most important charac-
teristics? The Standard developed by the Federal Geospatial
Data Committee in the United States was testedfor its suitabi-
lity for the description of cartographic produets such as electro
nic atlases. Following this, recommendations have been made
for the adaptation of existing Standards to make them suitable
for the description of electronic atlases.
In addition a new toolfor the Internet has been created, inten-
ded to facilitate access to the Workbook on Electronic Atlases
(1996). This tool can assist in the systematic description and
Classification of electronic atlases. It can also assist in the exten-
sion ofStandards for metadata, aimed at the description of car
tographic produets in general.
Resume
E. Siekierska, D. Williams G. Newton - Comment rendre
accessible les meta-donnees aux cartographes? CMIT comme ou-
til de meta-information pour atlas numeriques
Mots-cles: conservation des cartes et plans, meta-donnees,
applications
description systematique et Classification des atlas numeriques;
