As the expectations of the potential users
regarding the atlas concept are different

L'auteur presente, dans cet article, l'orga-
nisation et la production de la seconde
version de lAtlas national des Etats-
Unis, realise dans le cadre d'un partena-
riat entre les secteurs public et prive.
L'objectif en est de rendre accessible, un
large public, les nombreuses bases de
donnees sur les Etats-Unis, y compris les
moyens de visualisation. Des sondages des
utilisateurs potentiels ont ete effectues par
de methodes differentes, savoir des en-
quetes faites par I'imta (International
Map Trade Association), questionnaires
via l'Internet et groupes de discussion.
Etant donne que les idees que font des
utilisateurs potentiels d'un tel atlas sont
tout fait differentes de Celles des atlas
nationaux traditionnels, des ajustements
conceptuels ont du etre introduits. Plusi-
eurs versions sont envisagees papier, cd-
rom et Internet.

The National Atlas of the United States of America heeft een
uitgebreide Website. Bij een eerste bezoek oogt deze wat
saai: de beginpagina bevat veel tekst en weinig plaatjes (zie
figuur 4). Maar daarachter zit een schat aan informatie. Een
eenvoudig keuze-menu verwijst naar andere tekstpagina's
over het ontstaan van de atlas, de deelnemende instanties,
het laatste nieuws, veelgestelde vragen en een mogelijkheid
om commentaar te geven.
Maar de belangrijkste menu-keuze is natuurlijk 'Atlas
Maps'. Gaan we daar naar toe, dan krijgen we vervolgens
drie mogelijkheden om kaarten te bekijken: een Map Brow
ser opstarten, multimedia kaarten bekijken of bestanden
ophalen uit een kaartlagen-pakhuis. En aanvullend is daar
informatie te vinden over gedrukte kaarten.

The US Geological Survey and its partners began work on The
National Atlas of the United States of America in 1997 The National
Atlas is designed to promote grealer geographic awareness through the
development and dekvery of producta that provtde easy to use, map-like
views of our natural and socio-cuhural landscapes. The National Atlas is
being designed to serve the interests and needs of a diverse populace in
many ways, as an essential reference, as a framework for Information
discovery, as an Instrument of education; as an aid in research, and as an
accurate and rekable source for scientific Information
The National Atlas will contnbute to a better understandmg of the environmental, resource. demographic.
economic, social, poliöcal. and histonc dimensions of Amencan kfe. It willinclude producta designed to
stimulate children and aduks to visualize, comprehend. and even marvel at die complex relaüonships between
places. and people. These web pages include the earliest products of the National Atlas of the United States.
De Map Browser moet eerst opgevraagd worden, wat rede-
lijk snel gaat. Daarna kan men de gewenste thema's uit een
lijst selecteren en weergeven. Er zijn nu ruim 30 thema's be-
schikbaar over uiteenlopende zaken als verlaten mijngebie-
den, vliegvelden, vlinders, Staats en indiaans grondgebied,
county-grenzen, industrie, sterfte, wateren en vulkanisme.
De standaard schaal is 1:2.000.000 tot 1:2.500.000. Sommi-
ge thema's geven bij inzoomen wel meer details (bijv. India-
nenzaken), andere niet (bijv. vulkanisme). Bij het inzoomen
