In the ipth Century numerous German scientists contributed to
the exploration ofthe former Netherlands Indies. Among them
Baron Hermann von Rosenberg (1817-1888) deserves special at
tention. After a military training in his birthplace Darmstadt,
he signed on in the Dutch colonial army in the Malay archi-
pelago, where he stayed for 30 years. Düring these years he fiil-
filled various functions at different stations, the first 16years as
topographic draughtsman on the isle of Sumatra, the secondpe-
riod as a civil servant in the Moluccas and around New Gui
nea. In all functions he took part in topographic surveys and
mapping Operations of outlying districts ofthe archipelago. He
left us a number of topographic descriptions and a series of
maps which were highly appreciated and used by his contempo-
raries. Next to his official tasks he pursued his private interest
in ornithology, a subject on which he published a long series of
articles in professional Journals

Parmi les nombreux allemands qui ont contribue au ipe siecle
a l'exploration des anciennes Indes Neerlandaises, Baron Her
mann von Rosenberg (1817-1888) merite une attention particu-
liere. Apres avoir accompli, a sa ville natale, Dormund, lafor-
mation militaire, il s'etait engage lArmee coloniale neerlan-
daise dans l'archipel de Malaisie. Pendant son sejour de 30 ans,
il a rempli, h de divers endroits, des fonctions variees dont les
16premieres annees a Sumatra, comme dessinateur topographi-
que et par la suite comme fonctionnaire civil aux Moluques et
aux environs de la Nouvelle-Guinee, en participant aux levers
topographiques et h la cartographie des districts lointains de
l'archipel. II nous a laisse de nombreuses descriptions topogra
phiques et une serie de cartes, font appreciees et utilisees par ses
contemporains. Outre ses täches ofßcielles, il s'est occupe de l'or-
nithologie et avaitpublie une longue serie d'articles dans les re-
vues specialisees.
