1. But whether an increased exploitation of the [digital] map will serve
knowledge and understanding more than hype and glitter is uncertain,
fior without a graphically literate and geographically astute public,
maps may become little more than pleasurable icons employed to seduce
and entertain rather than to inform and enlighten [Monmonier,
1985].

Summary
J. Smits - The future of map curatorship. The necessity and
difßculty of surviving, or, how to keep our heads
Keywords: map curatorship
Technological changes in the produetion and viewing ofearto-
graphicalproduets pose many difficulties for map curators. Sen-
sual pereeption of cartography, which is always lurking at the
back ofthe mind, should not be obliterated by modern techno-
logy.
In this digital age where cartography and GIS become more in-
tegrated and where it is possible to integrate disparate sources of
information there seems for the cartographic professions to be a
shiftfrom purely cartographic visualisation to the use of spatial
data in all its manifestations. In the case ofmap curators this
means they have to learn the value of processing raw data as
well as the processed data, which means they have to perma-
nently educate themselves. Finally the author sees no future in
digital archiving without co-operation.
Resume
