Blok - Monitoring of spatio-temporal changes: characteristics of dynamics for visual exploration Keywords: dynamic visualisation, characteristics of dynamic phenomena, theory In the context of a research about application of dynamic visuali sation parameters in animations for monitoring purposes, this pa- per reports on characteristics of dynamic phenomena. A frame- work to describe characteristics in general concepts is proposed. The framework will be used to categorise a variety of phenomena in the physical environment. Ifit proves to be a suitable frame of reference, dynamic visualisation parameters will be linked to the characteristics. The goal is to design representation methods and interaction tools that prompt thinking about the processes at work and about spatio-temporal relationships by domain experts who perform monitoring tasks. The nature of monitoring tasks is consi- dered in the proposed framework. Explicit attention is paid to context-sensitivity and to the description of the temporal beha- viour of dynamic phenomena. Finally, some of the prospects and Problems ofthe research are discussed. Resume C.A.
