jectief. Er wordt naar objectieve metho-
des hiervoor gezocht door een aantal on-
derzoekers op het gebied van de (karto-
grafische) generalisatie, maar het blijkt
een moeilijk onderwerp te zijn.
In dit onderzoek zijn alleen binaire gege-
vens gebruikt. De hier beschreven proce-
dures (met uitzondering van erosie en
groei) zijn echter 00k toepasbaar op een
rasterbestand met kwalitatieve gegevens,
zoals geologische eenheden, bodemtypen
of landgebruik.

Most GIS vector-based Software packages contain few or no in-
built procedures for the generalisation of area boundaries. Raster
GIS Software, on the other hand, has available a wide ränge of
digital image processing procedures, some of which, singly or in
combination, can be used for the generalisation of area bounda
ries. A newprocedure, the 'moving aggregator' is introduced in the
article. No matter what procedures are used, in the case of a com
plex coastline the result is never perfect, but with a little manual
editing an acceptable result can be achieved.
