a better way?

As a result of the creation ofabundant cartographic and Statistical
Software, more people have the possibility to execute thematic
maps. The results are not always satisfying. The semiology of
graphics, initiated by Bertin (1967) and since that time often refi-
ned - even in this journal - is frequently ignored. Even the con-
struction of the legends is often confused and as a matter of fact
the legibility suffered. For that reason, this article gives a short
and critical insight in Bertins theory. A few examples are given to
illustrate the erroneous construction of thematic map legend and
some more satisfying Solutions are proposed. This latter aspect is
well illustrated by some striking examples.

Gräce la production abondante de logiciel cartographique et sta-
tistique, plus de personnes non specialises en cartographie peuvent
concipier des cartes thematiques. Cela mene parfois h des produits
errones. Souvent, la semiologie graphique, initiee par Bertin en
1967, a ete elaboree plus profondement, meme dans ce periodique-
ci. II arrive tout de meme, pas mal de fois, que les redactions car
tographiques ignorent ces regles gramaticales. Les legendes, elles
aussi, manquent parfois d' esprit critique. Ceci nous confronte
trop souvent une manque de lisibilite facile et rapide. Cet ar-
ticle-ci essaie, tout d'abord, de resumer la theorie de Bertin d' une
fizgon critique. Puis, quelques exemples seront donnis pour de-
montrer la fausse construction de legendes cartographiques. Natu-
rellement on trouvera en meme temps la proposition de Solutions
meilleures, ce qui est illustre graphiquement.
