Summary
A.K. Bregt R. van Lammeren - Thirty years ofGIS at Wage
ningen
Keywords: history of cartography, gis/lis, survey
The history of GIS at Wageningen (centred on the University) hos
many players and parallel developments. A document search and
Interviews with those directly involved gives an overview of deve
lopments in the fields of education, research and the supply of
geoinformation. At the beginning ofthe 70s, the starting shot was
a theoretical investigation into automated Systems for the storage
ofsoil and landscape data. By way of an experiment, around 1980
the first project-oriented geographic database was realised. From
that time, GIS appears clearly in education and research. Three
2000-XXV1-3
phases can be recognised: begin, anchoring and expansion. The
first phase (1983-1989) was typified by application questions and
Software development in many small pioneering groups. Applica
tions remained dominant during the next phase, but the deeper
anchoring (1990 -1998) was characterised by more fundamental
conceptual and theoretical studies, expansion of the infrastrueture
and official recognition by the university and the ministry. The
expansion phase (1998 to the present) is distinguished by contin-
uing increase in scale and by the amalgamation of education and
research in a central institute for geoinformation with an educa-
tional specialisation in geoinformation and recognised research
themes in fundamental and appliedprojects.
Resume

but, ancrage et developpement.
