how does it work?

This article addresses those who want to publish their GIS-data
on the World Wide Web. A short overvieuu is given of how the
Web sprouted from the Internet and ofthe file formats and com-
munication protocols that are its building blocks. It will become
clear how the basic set-up allows the publication only of static
maps with very limited interactivity and how the possibilities can
be broadened by adding server-side applications or client-side
plugins and applications such as Java applets or Scripts. Nowa-
days, most GIS sofiware vendors market a Solution to offer map-
ping and GIS functionality on the Web. Four of these are briefly
introduced and a recent benchmark to assess their usefulness for
cartographic applications is presented.

L'article interesse ceux qui desirentpublier leurs donnees de SIG
dans le WWW. Une courte description est faite sur l'origine du re
seau, issu de l'Internet et sur les formats et protocole de communi-
cation qui en forment l'armature. II apparaitra que le principe de
base permet uniquement la publication de cartes statistiques, avec
une interactivite fort limitee; les possibilites d'ajouter d'autres Ser
vices et applications (teile que Java) sont mentionnees. Aujourd'-
hui, la plupart des fournisseurs de logiciel de SIG offrent des Solu
tions pour utiliser des cartes de SIG sur le Reseau dont quatre sont
brievement presentes, avec l'appreciation de leur utilite pour les
presentations cartographiques.
Van 6 tot io augustus 2001 organiseert de International Cartographic Organisation (ica) haar
2oe internationale kartografische conferentie. Deze ICA-conferentie vindt plaats te Beijing,
China, onder het motto: Mapping the 2ist Century.
Het NVK-bestuur steh uit het Ormelingfonds twee reisbeurzen van f 1.000,- ter beschikking
voor deelname aan deze ICA-conferentie.
Voor een bijdrage uit het Ormelingfonds komen persoonlijke leden van de nvk in aanmerking die zieh verdienstelijk
hebben gemaakt in de kartografie en doorgaans niet in de gelegenheid zijn aan buitenlandse kartografische congressen,
seminars e.d. deel te nemen. Hierbij wordt gedacht aan hen die bijvoorbeeld: zieh langdurig hebben ingezet voor de kar
tografie, via onderzoek een belangrijk kartografisch resultaat hebben bereikt, een belangwekkende publicatie hebben ge-
produeeerd, belangrijk organisatorisch werk hebben verricht in de diverse sectoren van de vereniging of een andere bij-
zondere kartografische prestatie hebben verricht.
Het reglement van het Ormelingfonds is op te vragen bij de secretaris van de nvk. Meer informatie over de conferentie is

Als tegenprestatie wordt gevraagd een bijdrage te leveren aan de verslaglegging van de conferentie in het Kartografisch
Tijdschrifit.
Gei'nteresseerden die in aanmerking wensen te komen voor de tegemoetkoming in de kosten, kunnen een beargumen-
