Internationale waardering
In de loop der jaren ontving Rado talrijke onderscheidingen,
eredoctoraten en erelidmaatschappen zowel socialistische,
waaronder de Leninorde en de prestgieuze Hongaarse Kos-
suthprijs, als westerse. Ongetwijfeld was hij de meest gedeco-
reerde kartograaf van onze tijd. De viering van zijn 8oe ver-
jaardag in 1979 vormde een laacste afspiegeling van de waarde
ring en het respect die hem ten deel vielen. Van vele kanten
ontving hij brieven, telegrammen en cadeaus, zowel van hoge
partijfunctionarissen als van persbureaus, uitgevers, geografen
en kartografen, een curieuze verzameling van Sympathisanten.
Overigens hebben de Zwitsers het steeds moeilijk kunnen ver-
kroppen dat Rado hun was ontsnapt. In 1947 werd hij in ab
sende wegens schending van de Zwitserse gastvrijheid in oor-
logstijd veroordeeld tot 3 jaar gevangenisstraf. Zijn overlijden
in 1981 was frontpaginanieuws in de Tribüne de Geneve, de
voornaamste krant van Frans sprekend Zwitserland. Intussen
is de publieke waardering voor de communist Alexander Rado
in Hongarije aanzienlijk gedaald. Het plan om te zijner ere in
1999 een internationaal seminar te organiseren werd door de
overheid verworpen. Zoals uit het Festschrift möge blijken
heeft dit besluit de waardering van zijn medewerkers voor hun
vroegere chef niet ongunstig bei'nvloed. Ook in de Interna
tional Cartographic Association, die hem het erelidmaatschap
verleende, blijft de waardering voor Rado als prominent karto
graaf ongebroken.

This article gives an overview ofthe achievements of the Hunga-
rian cartographer-geographer Alexander Rado (1899 - 1981). Befo-
re the Second World War he livedfor many years in Moscow and
became well known in the West for his maps and publications on
the young Soviet Union, based on data made available to him as
a convinced communist. Düring the war he was head ofthe So
viet spy network in Switzerland. The GPU (forerunner of the
KGB) found him to be responsible for its dismemberment and he
landed for 10 years in the Lubjanka Prison in Moscow. Following
his return to Hungary in 1999 he showed himself to be a visionary
who developed many interesting intitiatives. The creation of the
International Map ofthe World at 1:2.900.000 scale in 294 sheets
is due to him. Tie published the news bulletins Cartactual and
Cartinform, both highly regarded worldwide. He organised Se
minars and exhibitions and was active as the leader of the ICA
Commission on Thematic Cartography. At national level he was
the promoter of the National Atlas of Hungary (1967) and ofthe
six-part regionalplanning atlas (1974). Düring the years he recei-
ved many awards, both socialist and Western. Recently his former
colleagues honoured him with aposthumous Festschrifi', in which
his achievements were fully described.

ves, avec une vision aigüe, telles que la carte du monde Techelle
de 1:2.900.000 realisee en 294 feuilles. II a publie les bulletins d'in-
formation Cartactual et Cartinform de reputation mondiale, a
organise des seminaires et expositions et a ete president le la Com
mission de cartographie appliquee de l'ACI. Au niveau national,
il a ete initiateur de l'Atlas national de Hongrie (1967) et d'un at
las regional d'amenagement du territoire en six tomes (1974). II a
ete titulaire de nombreuses distinctions aussi bien socialistes que
d'occidentales. Ses anciens collaborateurs lui ont consacre, apres sa
mort, un 'Liber Amicorum' la mesure de ses merites.
