2QOI-XXVII-I
Summary
M. van Egmond Final chord ofa map producing giant: the car-
tographic production ofthe firm Mortier, Covens Zoon (1794-
1866)
Keywords: history of cartography, commercial cartography,
research
Much is still unclear about the history of Dutch i9th-century
commercial cartography. Until recently there was hardly any
Information also about the Amsterdam firm Mortier, Covens
Zoon (1794-1866). Yet, this Publishing house was the direct
successor ofthe famous firm Covens Mortier, which dominated
the i8th-century map and atlas trade in The Netherlands.
However, as the result of research mainly involving
bibliographical sources a reconstruction of the production of new
cartographic material by Mortier, Covens Zoon can be made.
Even the position with regard to other map publishers is no longer
obscure. It is evident that the development of the production was
connected to internal aspects such as human capacity and the
policy of the firm. External aspects such as changes in the Dutch
political and economic situations also played an important role.
As the I9th Century proceeded, Mortier, Covens Zoon slowly
but surely lost their position within commercial cartography. The
cartographic tradition came to a definitive end in 1866, when the
last owner ofthe firm retired.

cartographie: l'entreprise Mortier, Covens Fils (1794-1866)
Mots-cles: histoire de cartographie, cartographie commerciale,
recherche
l'entreprise Mortier, Covens Fils, etablie Amsterdam (1794-
marche.
