Worldwide initiatives concerning the supply of

Analogous to previous attempts to establish world-wide map series,
e.g. the International Map ofthe World at the scale i: i ooo ooo,
at the present time we can note several initiatives to set up
gepographical databases covering the entire globe and, what is
new, to make the data available at no cost. The necessity to come
to a sustainable development of the Earth is forcing us to gather
all our resources, including map material. These intitiatives
include:
Global Mapping, a Japanese intitiative to generate a digital
topographic database of the entire Earth at a resolution of
i: i ooo ooo;
Digital Earth, prompted by the US and aimed at the Integra
tion of databases that can assist in the Solution of environmen
tal problems, more thematically oriented than Global Mapping;
Global Spatial Data Infrastructure GSDI), also originating in
the US, aimed at establishing the necessary infrastructure to be
able to integrate databases, with special emphasis on Standards;
United Nations Geographie Information Working Group
(UNGTWG), also involved in the development of a worldwide
topographic database, specially for development aidprojects and
for the use ofUN forces anywhere in the world.

Suivant les exemples du passe visant a realiser des series
cartographiques mondiales - teile que la carte Internationale du
Monde Techelle de 1:1.000.000 des initiatives ont eteprises afin
de realiser des bases de donnees couvrant le Monde entier et ce
qui est nouveau - d'en rendre l'utilisation gratuite. La necessicite
du developpement durable du Monde nous force rassembler et
coordonner toutes les sources y compris le materiel cartographique
qui en est un des elements. IIs'agit des initiatives suivantes:
Global Mapping, une initiative japonaise en vue de realiser
une base de donnees topographique numerique il 1.000.000 cou
vrant le Monde entier.
Digital Earth (Monde numeriquej issu des USA afin d'integrer
les bases de donnees relatives aux problemes d'environnement,
donc plus thematique que Global Mapping.
Global Spatial Data Infrastructures GSDI: Infrastructure glo
bale des donnees spatiales) developpe egalement aux USA, vi
sant a la creation d'une infrastructure necessaire pour Tintegra
tion des donnees standardisees.
UN Geographie Information Working Group (UNGIWG
Groupe de travail des Nations Unies en matiere d'information
geographique) travaille egalement sur une base de donnees topo-
graphiques mondiales necessaire pour les projets de developpe
ment et pour l'utilisation des forces des NU Techelle mondiale.
