Within the working procedures of The Directorate-General of
Public Works and Water Managementsuch as flood protection
and the responsibility for the national road System, much use is
made of geographical information.
In order to use suitably streamlined geoinformation the Directora
te-General has developed its own geoinformation infrastructure.
This ensures among other things that the most important basic
data are freely available throughout the Organisation. Catalogues
of metadata play an important role associated with availability.
The aim is that in due course the general public will also be able
to make use ofthese catalogues to access the data. This is possible
using internet GIS. A truly transparent access demands further
structuring and documenting of the geoinformation.

Dans le cadre de diverses activites du RWS telles que la protec
tion contre inondations ou la gestion des reseaux routiers natio-
naux - Ton fait appel tres souvent Tinformation geographique la-
quelle est presentee dans une infrastructure IG developpee par Le
RWS. Celui-ci fournit, entre autre, des donnees de base les plus im-
portantes pour Tutilisation Interieure, gratuitement. Pour assurer
l'acces des informations geographiques les catalogues de meta-in-
formation jouent un role important d'autantplus que ces informa
tions devraient plus tard etre rendues accessibles aux citoyens egale-
ment, via Internet SIG. Afin d'assurer la transparence, ilfaut en-
core effectuer des ameliorations de structure et de documentation.
