In 1996 Amsterdam University Library purchased a 'paskaart'
(hydrographic chart), made by Adriaen Gerritsen. Several
arguments were made to support the purchase. The map was
reputed to be the first cartographic work produced by the famous
Amsterdam printer Cornelis Claesz. Many of his pioneering
cartographic and geographic publications are in the possession of
the University Library, including several rare items and one that
is unique. Furthermore, the map was the beginning of the
Haarlem period' of the engraver Johannes van Doetecum. In
addition, there was the suspicion that the map could give an
insight into the development of the Dutch hydrographic maps of
Europe.
Another important reason for purchasing the chart was its
unusual nature, a paper map glued on parchment (as known from
Claeszoon 's catalogue of1609). All of these arguments are discussed
in the article. The restorer Peter Schrijen pays special attention to
the authenticity of the paper-parchment combination, research
that was made possible as part of the restoration Operation.
