Navigatie is nu bijna net
eeuw.

Summary
W.F.J. Mörzer Bruyns To the safe haven. A brief history of
navigation since the seventeenth Century
Keywords: history of cartography, navigation Systems, survey
Navigation is the knowledge that is necessary in order to sail a
ship safely along the shortest route between two places. Dutchmen
have made a big contribution to this science. The Dutch East
India Company was an important initiator. At its founding it
appointed an offical mapmaker, who was involved in the supply
ofmaps and other navigation aids to the Company s ships.
By about 1740, the Netherlands had fallen behind the technical
developments made by England and France. These countries made
advances especially in the calculation of longitude. Later, the
arrival of new techniques such as the gyroscopic compass and
radionavigation made obsolete the traditional instruments such as
the sextant, almanac and tide tables. These technologies have in
tum made way for electronic nautical charts and satellite
navigation Systems such as GPS.

juiste deurmat terecht.
