Old maps are very vulnerable in many cases. Because the material
is often unique and the Information value is high, it is very
important to save these sources for the future. This can be done
with the release of facsimiles. In recent years however, there hos
arisen a trend to digitize the old maps. To reach as many people as
possible, the digital files can best be distributed on the Internet.
Another possibility is to put the maps on cd-rom 's. Various archives
and libraries have put all or parts of their map collections on the
Internet already. One of the most beautiful examples in this case is
the site of the Library of Congress, the national library of the
United States. They use MrSID Software, which seems to be the
most advanced technology for this purpose. The digitizing of old
maps gives the possibility for (Internet) applications with old maps.
A possible application is to link background information at
locations on the old map, by making it a clickable map. Geocoding
of old maps can also be done, which gives the possibility to make
accuracy analyses. Geocoding give also the facilities to make
overlays between the old map and other maps. These applications
give new challenges to the discipline of historical cartography.

Les cartes anciennes sont souvent de manipulation delicate; aussi
il s'agit parfois des documents uniques et de grande valeur; leur
conservation pour le futur est done importante, par exemple par La
publication de fac-similes.
Toutefois, les dernieres annees, Ton constate une tendance vers la
mise en oeuvre des techniques informatiques pour cette fin,
assurant ainsi une diffusion aussi large que possible, via internet.
Une autrepossibilite en est l'edition de cd-roms.
Diverses articles et bibliotheques font dejä appel internet pour
faire connaitre, partiellement, leurs collections: un excellent
exemple en est le site de la 'Library of Congress', la bibliotheque
nationale des Etats-Unis d'Amerique. Elle utilise le logiciel
MrSID, la technologie la plus appropriee, l'heure actuelle pour
cet objectif.
L 'informatisation des cartes anciennes permet, egalement, leur
application via internet dont une des possibilites est d'y joindre des
informations d'ordre geographique d'oü des cartes cliquer'.
L'encodage geographique des cartes anciennes est une autre
possibilite, ouvrant la voie a des analyses d'exactitude et
permettant de realiser des combinaisons et superpositions entres les
cartes anciennes et les autres.
Ces applications constituent un nouveau defi pour la discipline de
la cartographie historique.
