Keywords: atlas cartography, background, general
School atlases atlases developed specifically for educational use
have existed since the 1770s. Ever since then they have changed
at a very slow pace, also observed in Rob van der Vaart's
contribution elsewhere in this issue. As the rate of change was,
amongst other factors, dependent on capital Investment, one
could not Start all over again with each new edition. However,
during the last ten years a significant change has been taken
place. This has been facilitated by the introduction of Computers,
which have simplified the production of the final combinations.
Additionally, the change has been influenced by the extra
functionality provided by the cd-rom included with the paper
atlas. New objectives in teaching (e.g. being able to operate
simple information Systems), which are partially based on these
technical innovations, further contribute to this. In this article
the author compares the enhancements.

Les atlas scolaires conqus specialement pour l'enseignement
datent depuis environ 1756; par apres des changements son
intervenus tres lentement, comme il ressort de l'article de Rob
van der Vaart, dans ce meme numero. La vitesse de changement
depend aussi des investissements, car pour toute nouvelle edition
Ton ne peut pas tout reviser. Cependant depuis une dizaine
d'annees Ton assiste une forte acceleration due d'une part La
phase technique de la production des originaux, fort simplifiee
suite l'emploi des ordinateurs. D'autre part ces changements
sont en fionction des possibilites supplernentaires qu'offre le cd
joint desormais h Tatlas 'papier'. De plus, de nouveaux
programmes scolaires, comprenant le savoir-fiaire en matiere de
systemes d'infiormation rudimentaire, bases egalement sur des
innovations techniques, contribuent aussi l'acceleration des
revisions. L'auteur passe en revue comparative ces nouvelles
possibilites.
