comparison of school atlases in Flanders

The evolution of atlas cartography for schools has been
inextricably linked to the evolution of the education System in
Belgium and Flanders. The introduetion presents a brief Synopsis

of the history and strueture ofthe Flemish education System. In the
main body, based on a selection of school atlases, the authors give
an overview of the evolution of the atlases used in the Flemish
education System. The first school atlases date back from the early
1820s. However, from 1850, new atlases were published and
existing ones were updated. In the 1970s, 8 dijferent atlases were
used within Flemish secondary education. Due to increasing
competition and rationalisation, this number was reduced to

compares them with the atlases used in the 1970s.

Devolution de la cartographie de l'atlas scolaire en Flandre ne
peutpas etre dissociee de l'evolution de l'enseignement en Belgique
et en Flandre. L 'histoire et la strueture de l'enseignement flamand
sont brievement decrites dans l'introduction.
A partir d'une selection limitee d'atlas scolaires, les auteurs ont
essaye d'etablir une evolution dans les atlas utilises par
l'enseignement flamand. Les premiers atlas scolaires datent de la
seconde decennie du i8eme siecle. A partir de 1830 on publiait
regulierement de nouveaux atlas scolaires et les existants furent
actualises. En 1970 on ne comptait pas moins de 8 atlas scolaires
dans l'enseignement secondaire flamand. Par la concurrence
croissante et la rationalisation le nombre on a ete actuellement
reduit 3. Ces atlas peuvent etre compares entre eux ainsi qu a
ceux utilises dans les annees '70 et ce au moyen de dijferents
parametres.
