Studying fantasy maps like the moral maps
produced in the iyth and i8th Century, we
are not distracted by geographical data,
thus enabling us to deduct the
fundamental properties and characteristics
maps use to conveying Information about
geographical Space. Relative distances play
an important role (distance implies
unfamiliarity whereas adjacency implies
familiarity and association), as well as
toponymy; topology is hardly significant.
Although different sets of scales apply, the
use of cartographical symbols entails some
idea of the true dimensions of the areas
depicted. These characteristics help us
researching the properties of new map-
relates analytical techniques, such as
spatialisation, and brand mapping.
