Summary
E. Heere The application of GIS in pre-cadastral map research
Keywords: historic cartography, gis, System description
GIS is not yet commonplace in the fields of historical cartography
and historical geography, although these diseiplines may well
benefit from its application. For example, GIS played an
important role in the research of Dutch pre-cadastral map books.
The GIS will principally be a search engine for users to search for
and query specific lots and map elements. Next, users are
interested in the exaet location of lots. Identifying corresponding
points on the old and a modern map, GIS assists in
geo-referencing the old map: the old map is correctly located, at
the right scale, onto the modern map. Finally, GIS is applied for
accuracy analysis of old maps. One approach compares the area of
the lots as measured by the GIS with the records in the map book.
Another approach is to overlay the old map onto a modern map.
A third approach to measure the accuracy ofold maps is the 'circle
method'.
