Ph. De Maeyer, J.-M. Pelle Ch. Collard Management of
map reproduction: aspects ofcost calculation
Keywords: map production, reproduction, cost calculation,
survey
Calculating the cost of map reproduction is a complex exercise.
Even if the costs ofdata acquisition and map creation are ignored,
many external factors influence the final price of a printed map.
Startingfrom a map design ready fior reproduction, there are two
phases that influence the final price of the map: the printing
process and the finishing process. Six factors influence the final
price of a map during the printing process: the map size, the type
and quality of paper, the number of copies, the method of
printing, the number of printing colours, and finally the urgency
of map reproduction. These factors not only influence the final cost
in their own right, but they are also mutually dependent. During
the finishing process, there are four determining factors: map
refinement (e.g. laminating), map folding, and finally packaging
and dispatching. These factors are interdependent as well. There is
not only the interdependency between factors within these phases,
but the factors within both the printing and finishing processes
may also impact on each other. For example, not all paper types
can be laminated, and the map size determines the map-folding
scheme. This article defines and explains all these inter-
dependencies, and summarises them in a model.

interviennent plusieurs facteurs.
