Betrokkenheid Europa
Onder het ESPRIT-programma van de Europese gemeenschap, het EU informatie
technologie programma, is een project gestart om Europa actief te betrekken bij
de OpenGIS-ontwikkelingen, onder de naam "GIS Interoperability Project
Stimulating the Industry in Europe" (GIPSIE), [7]. Het doel is het stimuleren van
OpenGIS-ontwikkelingen in de Europese industrie, teneinde zo concurrerend
mogelijk te kunnen zijn. Trekkers van de GIPSIE-organisatie zijn de Technische
Universiteit Wenen (Oostenrijk) en de Universiteit van Münster (Duitsland). Verder
heeft GIPSIE onder andere de volgende deelnemers: SICAD Geoinformatics
(Duitsland), InterGraph Europe (Nederland), Laser-Scan Ltd (UK), Space
Application Institute of the Joint Research Centre (Italië) en het OGC zelf.
