The importance of land information systems from the
point of view of the F.I.G.*
wanneer teveel wordt voorbijgegaan aan het kern
probleem nl. het goed tegen elkaar afwegen van de
kosten en het nut van de G.B.K.N. De versplin
tering op het gebied van de kaartvervaardiging in
Nederland kan alleen tot een eind worden gebracht
door van de G.B.K.N. in financieel opzicht een
haalbare kaart te maken. De kaart waarmee wordt
gestart mag in dit verband wel een minimum-
produkt zijn, indien deze kaart maar de mogelijk
heden in zich heeft uit te groeien tot een vollediger
kaart, wanneer het gebruik toeneemt.

The F.I.G.
In his paper "On the future of the F.I.G." presented
at the occasion of the meeting of the P.C. in Paris in
1978, prof. Matthias mentioned some special charac
teristics of the F.I.G. He quoted the professional
definition as given in article 4 of the statutes of the
F.I.G. and stated that this article provides us with
the very wide activities of our profession:
Article 4
The surveyor is a professional man who identifies,
determines the boundaries of, measures and values
public or private landed property, whether urban or
rural and whether on the surface or below, as well as
works executed thereon, and who arranges for the
registration of the property and settles questions oj
ownership connected therewith.
The surveyor also studies, plans and is responsible for
land development and town and country planning. He
deals with the technical, legal, economic, agricultural
and social aspects of the afore mentioned.
Prof. Matthias wondered whether there is anyone
within the F.I.G. who can evaluate this wide diversity
and whether there is a possibility to guide such an
organization towards a common goal. Let us face
this common goal as laid down in article 1 of the
statutes.

Summary
The paper discusses in a general way the main problems we have to face in modern society
when building up a land information system and gives a general view on the activities
within the F.I.G. regarding this topic. It is emphasized that the problems of the land
information systems concern the F.I.G. as a whole.
Zusammenfassung
Der Bericht behandelt in allgemeiner Weise die Hauptproblenie, die in der modernen
Gesellschaft zu studieren sind, bevor mit dem Aufbau eines Grundstücksinformations-
systems angefangen wird. Er gibt weiter eine Übersicht tiber die Aktivitaten innerhalb der
F.I.G. bezüglich dieser Angelegenheit.
Es wird benachdrückt, dass die G.I.S.-Probleme in der ganzen F.I.G. eine Rolle spielen.
