213 side of the Cadastre is that cooperating services shall be under the direction of qualified surveyors. Measurements almost invariably are based on fixed points whose coordinates are known in the national triangulation network (Rijksdriehoeksmeting) Measurements and calculations for this national triangulation were exe cuted between 1887 and 1928; stereographic projection was applied with the spire of Lieve-Vrouwetoren in Amersfoort as the origin of the system of coordinates. To keep this triangulation up to date, a special service was created as a section of the Cadastre, with an office in Delft. Another section of the Cadastre is the land consolidation ("remembre- nrent") service. Especially since World War II activities in this field have increased enormously, as farmers in the Netherlands are very keen on im proving the situation regarding division and distribution of plots of land. In many land consolidation schemes and also in new surveys use is nowadays made of photogrammetry. K.L.M. does photographic operations for this; for analysis there is a photogrammetric section of the Cadastre in The Hague. A central reproduction department for making plan films and photographic and diazo prints of cadastral maps is found in the Cadastral office in Am sterdam. The Cadastre has about 200 surveyors with full scientific training ("land- meters" and "geodetisch-ingenieurs") and some 600 surveyors ("land meetkundigen") and draughtsmen with a more limited background. The Meetkundige Dienst of Rijkswaterstaat comprises about 260 surveyors (landmeetkundigen) and cartographers or draughtsmen under a university- trained staff of 7 "ingenieurs" and 2 "landmeters". The principal task of this service consists in producing large scale maps (mostly 11000) as a basis for engineering projects (roads, dikes, canals, bridges, weirs, tunnels, etc.). The service also handles primary contouring of the country, filling it in with bench-marks of secondary and lower order. It is also responsible for compiling and editing river maps at 110.000. Where, as is often the case, engineering projects entail modifications in the situation of real property, there is close cooperation with the Cadastre on the basis of a well-defined 'Regeling van samenwerking' (regulation of cooperation).
