Het doel van dit boekje is: docenten, staf en studenten in te
lichten over weiking en mogelijkheden van rekenmachines en op
hetgeen hieromtrent in Delft reeds beschikbaar is. Behandeld
worden de beginselen van analoge en digitale rekenmachines in
algemene zin.
Aanwezige rekenautomaten worden kort besproken. Het boekje
besluit met een blik op de toekomst.
Computer-directed Map for Airborne Navigation.
Pilots of supersonic craft may soon be able to determine their
location over the earth by glancing at a screen on their instrument
panel.
An experimental system now under ïefinement by IBM engineers
can project a highly accurate circular map on a screen. The screen
is 7 1/2 inches in size; the earth area projected on it is 400 miles in
diameter —125,000 square miles.
Calculations to position the map on the screen, and to pinpoint
the pilot's location, are performed by an airborne computer.
A detailed map of half of the earth is reproduced photographic
ally on the inside surface of a glass hemisphere about six inches in
diameter. A section of the map, illuminated by a beam of light, is
projected onto a flat, translucent screen in front of the pilot.
As the plane moves, the computer automatically adjusts the
map presentation.
