of documentation. It has international members in 41 countries
and specialists and international members in a number of others.
It has a central classification committee and a number of other
study committees concerned with such subjects as research on the
theoretical basis of information, classification research, theory
of machine techniques and systems, terminology and lexicography,
and technical information for industry. It produces a number of
publications which give accounts of its activities, and numerous
booklets of practical assistance to workers in the documentation
field. These include a 'Bibliography of Directories of Sources of
Information a world-wide directory to national technical information
services'a list of abstracting services in science, technology, medicine,
agriculture, social sciences, humanities, the 'Index Bibliographicus
and the UDC-Scheme. A useful publication, which lists all the
booklets, etc., is the 'FID Publications Catalogue (FID No. 427).
2.9.2 The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO
addressirue de Varembé, 1211 Geneva 20) was founded in 1946
to follow up the work of the International Federation of National
Standardising Associations, and the United Nations Standards
Coordinating Committee. Its objectives are to promote the devel
opment of standards in the world with a view to facilitating
international exchange in goods and services and to develop mutual
cooperation. Its membership is made up of the national standards
bodies in 53 countries.
2.9.3 The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development
(in Europe: OECD; addressChateau de la Muette, 2 rue André
Pascal, Paris 16e) was established in 1961 as a successor to the
Organisation for European Economic Cooperation. Its objectives
are to promote policies designed to achieve the highest sustainable
economic growth and employment and a rising standard of living
in member countries while maintaining financial stability, and
thus to contribute to the development of the world economy; to
contribute to sound economic expansion in member as well as in
nonmember countries in the process of economic development;
and to contribute to the expansion of world trade on a multilateral
non-discriminatory basis in accordance with international obli
gations. It publishes annual and monthly reports; the 'OECD-
Observer'technical and statistical bulletins; and numerous spe
cialised books and reports on all aspects of the economy.
2.9.4 The International Union of Forestry Research Organisations
(addressForstliche Forschungsanstalt, Amalienstrasse 52/11. Mu-
nich 13, West Germany) was founded in 1890. It aims to facilitate
contact and exchanges of ideas between research workers in different
countries, particularly as regards drawing up research programmes
and collaboration in carrying them out; to convene periodical
meetings combined with study tours; and to work for unification
of terminology and standardisation of research methods. 165
