make up the bulk of its membership. Congresses are held every
three to five years; and there are research sections specialising
in the following subjectsbibliography, general forest influences,
research on site factors, study on forest plants, silviculture, forest
protection, forest management, forest economics, operational
efficiency, mechanical conversion, and the history of forestry. It
has published the Oxford classification for forestry and a number of
research reports.
2.9.5 The International Geographical Union (addressBliim-
lisalpstrasse 10, 8006 Zürich, Switzerland) was founded in 1922,
with the purpose of promoting study of geographical problems,
initiating and coordinating research requiring international cooper
ation, and providing for scientific discussion and publication;
arranging international congresses; and appointing commissions
to study special matters which arise during the intervals between
congresses. Among the subjects being considered by commissions
are a world land-use survey, geography and cartography of world
population, interpretation of aerial photographs, and national atlases.
Its publications include a twice yearly newsletter, reports of commis
sions, conferences and congresses, bibliographies and directories.
2.9.6 The International Federation of Building and Public Works
(address33 av Kléber, Paris 16e) was founded in 1905 to esta
blish continuous relations between all existing employers' groups
in the building trade and civil engineering industry; to centralise
commercial, industrial, scientific, technical, and social information
and to supply affiliated organs with documentationto promote the
formation of national groups in countries where they do not exist
and secure for the building trade and civil engineering industry the
status due to it; and to facilitate the international exchange of
views by organising international meetings and congresses. Its
members are the national employers' organisations of 14 countries.
It maintains a documentation centre and has drawn up, jointly
with the International Federation of Consulting Engineers the
'General Conditions of Contract for Work of Civil Engineering Con
struction'Among the subjects it studies are industrialisation, the
use of new methods in the building industry and construction
financing. It publishes a quarterly review and a news sheet.
2.9.7 The International Cartographic Association (ICA; address
Bachlaan 39, Hilversum, Netherlands) was founded in 1959- It
is concerned with promoting the advance of the study of carto
graphic problemsinstigating cartographic research involving
cooperation between different nations; exchanging ideas and do
cuments; and furthering training in cartography. Its membership
is made up of national societies or committees in 32 countries and
it publishes conference reports, a bulletin, and the 'International
Yearbook of Cartography It promotes the 'Bibliotheca Cartographies
and has started the preparation of a cartographic dictionary
'Technical Terms in Cartography'
