In 1074 werd aan alle eigenaren de plicht opgelegd, een op
gave te verstrekken van al hun bezittingen, met inbegrip van var
kens en kippen.
Denken we hier niet onmiddellijk aan het bekende Engelse
Domesdaybook, waarover o.a. Arthur Bryant schrijft in „The
story of England":
William of Normandy compiled after 1085, mainly that
he might tax his realm more closely, a record of all feudal holdings
directly or indirectly liable to the CrownHe recorded, with
meticulous efficiency the ownership and taxable value of every
manor or village under lordship, both at the conquest and at the
time of the survey. This included the number of its hides or
ploughlands (usually reckoned at about 120 acres) of the
freemanof the mills, fish-pounds and plough-teams, the
extent of its woodland, meadow and pasture-everything in short,
that was capable of being taxed. Originally drawn up on long
parchmentrolls stored in the Treasury at Winchester, the survey
was copied into two volumes christened by the english „Domes
day" because there was no appeal against it (one volume was
for the rich countries of Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, and the other
in less detail for the rest of England south of the T. (zie:

It was the most remarkable administrative document of the
age; there is nothing like it in the contemporary annals of any
other country. It enabled the king to know the landed wealth of
his entire realm, how it was peopled and with what sort of man,
what their rights were and how much they were worth
